Dry Needling

Gloved hand of an Osteopath administering a dry needling treatment

Dry Needling is a treatment that uses small filament needles similar to acupuncture needles to release tight muscles with the aim of decreasing muscle pain and dysfunction. Dry Needling targets the neuromuscular system affecting muscle tightness and joint mobility.

A local twitch response (LTR) is achieved by the application of a thin needle into the muscle fiber. You will often experience a significant cramping sensation from the twitch response but then notice an immediate improvement in your symptoms. Afterwards there may be a general ache in the muscle, similar to the feeling after an intense workout or following a deep massage. This release can immediately improve the range of movement in a joint, reduce pain and improve function.

Whilst Dry Needling can be done as a stand a-lone treatment it often requires that the underlying biomechanics be addressed and therefore is used in conjunction with other ‘hands on’ osteopathic techniques.

Dry Needling can be used for many conditions including but not limited to:

•      Neck, low back or thoracic pain

•      Tension type headaches

•      Piriformis Syndrome

•      Sciatica

•      Jaw pain

•      Whiplash disorders

•      Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Dry Needling can also be used in the management of sporting injuries such as:

·      Groin strain

·      Tennis or golfer’s elbow

·      Achilles tendinopathy

·      Gluteal tendinopathy

·      Rotator cuff tendinopathy

·      Shin Splints
